Coffee Lecture: Versioning with Git - The Introduction
Wed Jul 7 2021 02:00 pm
Dealing with different versions of files is becoming an increasingly important task in research data management. It is particularly important to keep track of things when working with colleagues. In addition, third-party funders are placing increasing emphasis on securing and versioning research data in order to protect the underlying raw data of publications as best as possible against manipulation. A tool-supported version management helps to keep the daily work with data in order and to document work processes transparently and comprehensibly.
This Coffee Lecture aims to explain why it makes sense to use version management and which tools are available for this. A closer focus is placed on the version control system Git and how to take your first steps with the software.
While the Coffee Lecture is an introduction to version control and Git, a practical workshop on versioning research data with Git and Gitlab will follow on July 21, 2021. This is carried out jointly by the computing center of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the contact point for research data management.
